Nigerian singer and Grammy Award winner Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems has achieved a noteworthy career milestone.

On Sunday, June 30, at the 2024 BET Awards, the singer was named the recipient of the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award.

Tems' "Me & U." won over songs by Kirk Franklin ("All Things"), Halle Bailey ("Angel"), CeCe Winans ("Come Jesus Come"), Erica Campbell ("Do You Believe in Love?"), Maverick City Music, Naomi Raine & Chandler Moore ("God Problems"), Shirley Caesar ("Award All of the Glory"), and Kirk Franklin ("Try Love" to take home the trophy.

A contemporary urban gospel performer is the recipient of the BET Awards' Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award. The winner is determined by a mix of sales and the overall quality of content released during the qualifying period.

The award's new title was adopted in 2017 after it was first known as Best Gospel Artist.

Tems won her first Grammy in 2023 for her work on Future's popular song "Wait For U."

The song, which also features Canadian megastar rapper Drake, samples Tems' voice.

Tems, who was 27 years old then, was also the first Nigerian female musician not mixed race to take home the coveted "Best Melodic Rap Performance" title.
