Nigerian afrobeats singer David Adeleke better known as Davido has talked about his significant contributions to the afrobeats genre.
According to the singer, discussing afrobeats would be incomplete without mentioning him.
Davido made this statement in the most recent edition of TheBeatJuice magazine.
He said, “Afrobeats can’t be brought up without my name. Impossible,” he said.
Like Wizkid and Burna Boy, Davido has previously criticized afrobeats, even though he is considered to be one of the three most popular afrobeats performers.
Davido bemoaned the "boxing" of all African musicians into the afrobeats genre, irrespective of their musical styles, during an appearance on an episode of the Business Untitled Podcast.
Although he stated that he would rather be called an "afro-fusion" artist, he added that the term "afrobeats" doesn't bother him because of its influence on African music.
He added, “I don’t get offended when we’ve been categorised as Afrobeats. I mean, we need a genre. It could be R&B or Afropop.
I call my music Afrofusion but I’m not big on ‘O put Afrofusion on my song.’ I know how long it took for African music to become mainstream."
