Ogun Indigene Forum - Ghana has commiserated with the victims of the gas tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday, April 27 in the Ita-Oshin area of the Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state.

The suspected cause of the crash was a mechanical deficiency, leading to the tanker vehicle crashing into the road barricade. The tanker burst into flames while other vehicles and shops were burnt.

Bola Akinsanya, the National President of Ogun Indigene Forum expressed his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the state especially the family of the bereaved and those that lost properties in the incident.

He said the devastating incident has brought pain and anguish to many families.

According to him, the "government through agencies must do more to avert possible recurrence, through institutional inspection of all vehicles for compliance in terms of road worthiness." He added the "downstream petroleum regulatory agency should help ensure that health and safety measures are well maintained, particularly on our roads."

He encouraged the government to carry out thorough investigations for proper punishment to be meted out to individuals responsible for the incident.

The government should also compensate residents of the state who were affected by the incident to cushion its effect on their lives.

Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun on Sunday, April 30 ordered the evacuation of residents in some of the buildings affected by the gas explosion.

The governor, during an on-the-spot assessment of damage done to properties and businesses around the area, said the evacuation would allow for integrity tests to be carried out on the affected buildings.

Abiodun also promised that the state would foot the hospital bills of victims of the incidents while owners of damaged property would be compensated.

At least one person was confirmed dead, with six others injured and six vehicles burnt in a gas tanker explosion on the Abeokuta-Sango-Lagos Expressway.
