Nigeria's preferred candidate for the Super Eagles role, Herve Renard, has been reappointed as head coach of the Saudi Arabian national team.

The 56-year-old, who has been widely linked to the vacant Super Eagles job, was reappointed by the Middle Eastern side on Saturday, October 26, following the dismissal of Italian coach Roberto Mancini.

Renard, who was in charge of Saudi Arabia from 2019 to 2023, disclosed that he didn't intend to leave but couldn't decline the invitation from his home country.

The former Morocco coach led Saudi Arabia to their famous 2-1 victory against world champions Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

He left the role to coach the French women's national team in March 2023 and decided to step down from that role after the Paris Olympics.

In a video on X, Renard disclosed that his story with Saudi Arabia is not finished yet.

“I am back. I did not intend to leave, but when your country knocks on your door, you have to respond,” Renard said.

“I did not finish my story with Saudi yet.”

The Super Eagles are still without a substantive head coach, with Augustine Eguavoen currently serving as the interim gaffer for the three-time African champions.
