Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has expressed disappointment at the unfair treatment the Super Eagles team has been subjected to following their arrival in Libya for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Super Eagles team and officials have been stranded at Al Albaq Airport after their chartered flight, which was originally scheduled to land at Benghazi Airport, was diverted.
The Libyan federation did not send any delegation to meet the team or arrange for a shuttle to convey the players to their hotel, which is about a three-hour drive away from their current location.
Reacting to the incident, Victor Osimhen, who is currently out of the team due to injury, took to social media to lambast the Libyan federation for the inhumane treatment of his teammates.
In a statement on his Instagram story, the 23-year-old wrote: "I am disappointed by the unfair treatment my brothers and coaches are facing at the Libya airport last night. Actions like this go against the spirit of sportsmanship. My support is with my team, and I know they'll stay strong despite these obstacles. I call on CAF and other football bodies to intervene, as my teammates and officials are still stranded at the airport in Libya. This is uncalled for and inhumane. We stand together, stronger than ever."
The reigning African Footballer of the Year believes the incident is a planned tactic to weaken the team's morale ahead of the game.
"This attempt by the Libyan FA is no longer just a delay; it's an intentional tactic to weaken and ruin the morale of the players, and it's beginning to look more like a hostage situation. The safety and well-being of my teammates and all the team staff are the most important things right now," he added.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to take on Libya on Tuesday, October 15, in the return encounter of the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The three-time African champions defeated the Mediterranean Knights 1-0 in the first leg on Friday, October 11, courtesy of Dele-Bashiru's late winner in the 87th minute.
