Former Italian World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro has disclosed that he rejected the offer to coach the Super Eagles.
Explaining his decision to turn down the offer to coach Nigeria, the 2006 Ballon d'Or winner disclosed that he prefers to wait for other offers from Italy and Europe before he considers travelling outside the continent.
In an interview with Italian publication, La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Real Madrid and Juventus defender said:
“I had offers from Nigeria [national team] and Iranian clubs, but I want to wait for Serie A and European clubs until December. After that, I may start travelling again,” the legendary Italian defender noted.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have endured a difficult time replacing Jose Peseiro who he left the role in February, having guided the Super Eagles to the finals of the African Cup of Nations.
Finidi George, who was drafted in as the new head coach of the three-time African champions also stepped down from the job after just 46 days in charge.
The NFF recently announced German tactician Bruno Labbadia as the new head coach, but the former Wolfsburg manager subsequently rejected the offer.
As the Nations Cup qualifiers beckons, the NFF has charged sporting director Augustine Eguavoen to lead the team in the games against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Nigeria will take on Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 7, before travelling away to Kigali to face Rwanda three days later.
