Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has hailed John Mikel Obi as a legend and idol after surpassing his Premier League record.

Iwobi, 28, broke Mikel Obi's record for the most minutes played in the Premier League by a Nigerian player, amassing 16,289 minutes in the English topflight.

This milestone was achieved after Iwobi featured in Fulham's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on matchday 32 of the recently concluded season.

Iwobi, who began his career under Arsene Wenger at Arsenal before joining Everton in 2019 and later Fulham in the summer of last season, expressed his admiration for Mikel Obi, stating:

"Breaking Mikel's record is a significant achievement, as he is a legend in the game and was once my idol. I'm not resting on my laurels, though - I aim to continue pushing myself and setting a higher bar for those who follow."
