Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz has emerged the leading candidate to win the African Footballer of the Year award, according to reports.

Born to a Moroccan father and a Spanish mother, Diaz switched allegiance from Spain to Morocco this year despite representing Spain at the various youth levels.

The 24-year-old helped Real Madrid to clinch the UEFA Champions League, La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup last season.

The former AC Milan star also registered 12 goals and nine assists in 44 appearances across all competitions for Carlo Ancelotti's side.

According to Diario AS, the Spanish-born Moroccan international is now the frontrunner to succeed Victor Osimhen as the new African Best Player.

Diaz will battle the likes of Ademola Lookman, Victor Boniface, Mohammed Kudus and Mohammed Salah for the prestigious award.
