Veteran English football manager Sam Allardyce has revealed that Nigeria's Austin Jay-Jay Okocha would have been worth a fee of £100 million in today's transfer market.
Allardyce, who was in charge of Bolton from 1999 to 2007, had the privilege of managing Okocha when he joined the English club in 2002 from Paris Saint-Germain.
The Nigerian international played under Allardyce for four seasons in the Premier League.
The duo created many memorable moments together, notable among them was their iconic on-the-pitch dance.
Okocha lit up the Premier League with his dazzling skills, becoming a fans' favourite at the Reebok Stadium.
The two-time BBC African Player of the Year scored 18 goals as an attacking midfielder in 144 games under Sam Allardyce.
Speaking on the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Big Sam disclosed that one of the most difficult moments of his career was the departure of Jay-Jay Okocha from the club.
“Probably one of the saddest things, when you’ve got what you consider a world-class player, when my job is to say it is the end,” the former Leeds United boss said.
When asked about Okocha's market value in today's transfer window, the 70-year-old said:
“£100 million.
“I have always said, why did nobody else take him in the Premier League? What reputation did he have to say he is not for us on a free transfer?
“Somebody must have thought he wouldn’t fit into the structure of the team, but he took instructions better than anybody else.
“The manager wants to play like this and we play like this and get on with it, that is him as captain.
“Within the structure, you have to allow those talented players to express themselves, and that is what we did. He was so good in terms of what he achieved."
