Wike, Akpabio plotting to install next INEC chairman - Atiku's aide

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

Demola Olarewaju, an aide to former vice president Atiku Abubakar, has said the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio have a plan to install the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This was after a rumour circulated on Monday that President Bola Tinubu had sacked Professor Mahmood Yakubu as chairman of INEC.

The rumour has since been debunked by the Presidency which stated that appropriate channels will be used in the likelihood of a development regarding INEC.

However, Atiku's aide expressed the believe that the rumours was started by Tinubu's Lagos men to counter Wike and Akpabio.

He shared on X, "Tinubu’s Lagos henchmen flew a kite yesterday to counter the Wike and Akpabio plan to impose the next INEC Chairman.

"The argument from the Wike and Akpabio is that Nigerians would easily see through APC rigging agenda with a Yoruba INEC - Lagos Boys tested it yesterday.

"Lagos Boys want an INEC Chairman from the SW that they can control easily and directly for Tinubu while also being in position to use him to manipulate state gubernatorial elections and sell it to the highest bidder for themselves - they just want to cash out at this point."
