It's an ambitious plan, not only for Lagos but for Nigeria's transportation sector in its entirety and Nigeria's contribution to global climate change sustainability!
Most importantly, the federal government ought to focus on this initiative and plan to introduce 1 million electric buses in Nigeria within two years as a laudable goal, with potential benefits including:
1. Reducing petrol consumption: shielding ordinary people from the volatility of petrol prices and promoting cleaner transportation.
2. Decarbonization: contributing to global efforts to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.
3. Industrialization: to foster local manufacturing of electric vehicles, creating jobs, and driving economic growth.
Nigeria's abundant natural gas reserves will play a crucial role in the energy transition, providing a cleaner alternative to petrol. By leveraging this resource, Nigeria can:
1. Reduce inflation: decreasing dependence on imported petrol can help stabilise prices and reduce inflation.
2. Preserve forex: most importantly, conserving foreign exchange by reducing petrol imports which would help strengthen the naira.
3. Strengthen the naira: a stable currency will attract foreign investment, promote economic growth, and improve living standards.
I hope the government consider this ambitious plan because its potential benefits for Nigeria's economy, environment, and citizens are substantial.
