Court denies Emefiele's travel request

Suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele Suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele

The High Court in the Federal Capital Territory division in Maitama, dismissed an application by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Godwin Emefiele seeking permission to travel to the United Kingdom for a medical check-up.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, Justice Hamza Muazu ruled that Emefiele failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove that the medical trip was necessary and unavoidable.

The judge noted that although Emefiele claimed he was invited to the UK for medical attention, he did not present a copy of the invitation to the court.

It is worth mentioning that the former CBN Governor had sought permission from the FCT High Court in Abuja to travel abroad for medical treatment.

During Tuesday’s proceedings, Emefiele’s lawyer, Mathew Burkaa, mentioned the pending application but did not disclose the destination.

Furthermore, the judge pointed out that Emefiele did not demonstrate that his condition could not be treated in Nigeria.
