Reports indicate that the Fair Work Commission in Australia has recently declared a 3.7 % increase in the country’s minimum wage.
This sets a new hourly rate of $24.10 per hour, translating to a weekly wage of $915.91 for a standard 38-hour work week, equivalent to approximately N956,175 naira per week.
The FWC believes this increment will benefit over 2.6 million Australian employees which is about 20.7% of the national workforce.
“The increase of 3.75% which we have determined is broadly in line with forecasted wage growth across the economy in 2024 and will make only a modest contribution to the total amount of wage growth in 2024,” the commission said.
Adding that, “In determining this level of increase, a primary consideration has been the cost-of-living pressures that modern-award-reliant employees, particularly those who are low paid and live in low-income households, continue to experience notwithstanding that inflation is considerably lower than it was at the time of last year’s review.”
The revised minimum wage in Australia has reignited debates in Nigeria, regarding its own national minimum wage, which is currently before the President.
The Labour Union has proposed an increase from N30,000 to N250,000 for all workers in the country.
In response, Nigerians have voiced their opinions on social media.
@tukemike: And Nigerians are here taking less than $30 a month and still cannot protest for anything. Una too love suffering!!
@gospelsongsng: 30k minimum wage in Nigeria, Should we still be hopeful?
@CertifiedAnelka: My country only increase the government officials salary. They are less concern about the masses.
@Ugochukwu_96: And Tinubu says he cannot pay $100 per month?
Which kind one one chance we don enter so?
@PureStanley1: But Nigeria is struggling to pay N30k minimum wage, and the FG is still contemplating if they should carry on with N60k proposed minimum wage increment.
Nigeria has a spending problem, they can't pay Nigerian workers, but the FG budgeted and disbursed N21Bn for VP Shettima's residence.
@jrnaib2: Tinubu can't even pay N70,000.
wengy_: Abeg who knows an Australian company hiring remote workers. Because having this this kind of salary and residing in Nigeria alone, you don blow.
ifemi_007: The entire Australia a continent is 25million people. Nigeria, a country is almost 250million. Where are we going to find the resources to feed ourselves when we are reproducing like bacteria, yet producing nothing.
