Earlier today, Wema Bank sent a message commemorating the International Women's day celebrations
Happy International Women's Day from all of us at Wema Bank.

However, the message was jarred with a very explosive backlash from BBC's Sex for grades journalist, Kiki Mordi who called for a boycott of the bank
Shame on you!#BoycottWemaBank
— Kiki Mordi (@kikimordi) March 8, 2020
While several people were divided over the outcome of the tweet and felt it was unnecessary. Others stood with Mordi. A greater bulk of twitter folks felt the call for the boycott wasn't just impossible but dramatic.
People still think that their tweets can actually influence social change.

Boycott Wema bank. LMFAOOOOOO.
If Wema Bank has 10 million customers, you think your tweet with 15 retweets will get to 5% of the population? ????????????.
You people overrate yourselves and your tweets.
Just say you hate WEMA BANK or you want to join the bandwagon as usual. These two messages down here shouldn't call for unreasonable outcry. The "digital egungun" is funny though yet the message has been passed.

Calling on women to be better is reasonably okay unless you reason pic.twitter.com/8iR4k8TH0C
Hahaha shame on Wema bank because they picked the kind of women to celebrate? When its "Father's day", we hear "To all responsible father's blah blah"
— the Morris Monye factor (@Morris_Monye) March 8, 2020
Wema bank celebrated the struggles of women making a difference not just because they own a vagina.#EachforEqual https://t.co/oizG9IUq7F
I don't see what's wrong with the Wema Bank copy. Women prop up patriarchy and uphold misogyny, and that was what the bank's ad highlighted.
— Jamal (@JajaPhD) March 8, 2020
Or is this the usual attempt to dodge responsibility?
Kikimordi approved of the Gillette message because it will cause more men to introspect. Why does she disapprove of the Wema bank message? Doesn't she want women to introspect? Lol. pic.twitter.com/7PhLI0ksOP

If I ask what is wrong with Wema's message, you will start foaming in the mouth. https://t.co/GsFG7dCf0J

The only transaction you’ve probably had with Wema bank your entire life was buying your Jamb form from them, but you are here pushing a boycott.
— Cross? (@Elcrucifixio) March 8, 2020
Boycott how nau? Abi you wan write jamb again?
Odun was on her side here
Lmao I’m not even shocked that WEMA Bank is sending out mails like that.
— Big Odun Energy (@OdunEweniyi) March 8, 2020
Someone on their comms team probably said “it will trend”.
And that was all the metric they needed. Olds are weird. ????
Boycott Wema Bank like say you get Wema bank account Lmaoo
— Jack Robinson (@FeralJack_) March 8, 2020
Any small thing, you people will cancel/boycott. What Wema bank’s official handle tweeted wasn’t that deep abeg.
— Cross? (@Elcrucifixio) March 8, 2020
boYcOtT wEmA bAnK. Are you a Wema bank customer?????
But today started on a good note, from celebrating women worldwide to celebrating Nigerian wins in the UFC and boxing.

All of a sudden we're fighting Wema bank ????????????
I love this app.
I use Wema Bank tho and they’re one very good bank that has upgraded to a level I like.
— Laba Laba Master ???????????? (@Buchi_Laba) March 8, 2020
- You’re telling people to boycott Wema bank because you’re president of easily triggered women ?????????????????????????????????!!
If you fvck with one bank the rest stop fvcking with you.. You Dey do yourself.
Some guns are loading
Today is the day for men to shut up, take a back seat and listen to women for once in your lives. The ads are not about you, the calls to boycott are not about you, the fight for equality for women is not about you, IWD is not about you. Don’t tell us what to be okay with today.
— #EachForEqual Mocha???????? (@raychellered) March 8, 2020
I haven't commented on the other ones before they were just just borderline stupid but this is extremely offensive and clueless and the language is one of cognitive dissonance.
— Kiki Mordi (@kikimordi) March 8, 2020
Go back and learn gender sensitive writing and operations because you obviously lack it Wema Bank! https://t.co/i4KLtoGD3A
