Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a bold move to swap Danish striker Rasmus Højlund for Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman this summer, as the Premier League giants seek to address their persistent attacking problems ahead of the 2025/26 season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

After another underwhelming campaign in front of goal, United are desperate for reinforcements. According to EPL Index, the club are preparing a decisive bid for Africa’s reigning Footballer of the Year to inject badly needed quality into their frontline.

United’s season under Ruben Amorim has mirrored their woeful goal return. With only 39 goals scored in 34 Premier League matches, the deficiencies in attack have been impossible to ignore.

Neither Højlund nor Joshua Zirkzee has managed to convince as a reliable number nine, prompting the club’s hierarchy, led by new director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, to take action.

Explaining the situation, EPL Index wrote, “..in light of Højlund’s inconsistent performances, United are considering offering the young Dane back to his former club Atalanta as part of a deal to secure Lookman, who has flourished in Italy.”

Lookman’s resurgence has made him one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe. He has scored 18 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances this season, not including his standout hat-trick in last season’s Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Few predicted such a turnaround when Lookman struggled for consistency during his previous spells at Everton and Fulham. His transformation has attracted widespread interest across Europe.

Tutto Juve highlights the intensity of the competition for his signature crediting Juventus, Manchester United and Liverpool with interest in the 27-year-old.

Valued at €60m by Transfermarkt, United know they must act swiftly if they hope to bring Lookman to Old Trafford.

Beyond Lookman’s impressive statistics, United’s recruitment strategy also reportedly appears to be shifting towards proven players who can make an immediate impact.

“For Manchester United supporters, the prospect of Ademola Lookman pulling on the red shirt next season will spark genuine excitement. After a year of watching a blunt, often disjointed forward line struggle to impose itself, the idea of adding a player with pace, flair, and directness feels like a badly needed shift in strategy,” EPL Index concluded.
