Media entrepreneur and politician, Dele Momodu, has described his relationship with President Bola Tinubu, stating that despite their political differences, they share mutual respect and admiration.
The founder and publisher of Ovation Magazine made this revelation during a candid interview on the latest episode of Deep Dive, a podcast hosted by Teju Babyface.
When asked about his relationship with the president, Momodu acknowledged that Tinubu has shown him love, but he emphasized that their personal bond does not influence his political ideology.
"I would say yes, because not supporting his presidential bid does not make us enemies. I can never be his enemy. I have always been a great fan of his, and I think he is older than me, so the respect is mutual. I can say freely that he loves me. He has shown me love. But that love does not translate to politics. Because he loves me and I love him does not mean I must support his political ambition," Momodu stated.
He further explained that he remained in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after Atiku Abubakar lost the 2023 presidential election because he had given his word not to leave the party, regardless of the outcome.
"I was already a member of PDP and wanted to contest on its platform before Tinubu joined the race in APC. When we were purchasing our forms, PDP asked us if we would abandon ship if we didn’t get the ticket. My answer was no," he said.
He emphasized that he is a man of his word, which is why he stayed in the party despite its struggles.
"Unlike Wike, who didn’t get the ticket and is busy throwing tantrums, I said I would remain in PDP. Right now, I’m embarrassed by what is happening in the party, but I have not left," he added.
According to Momodu, the PDP has been hijacked, but he remains committed to his principles.
"Nobody likes what is happening in PDP right now because some people have taken over the soul and body of the party. Even if my own father woke up from heaven and picked the APC ticket, I would not support him. People don’t understand that principle—I am a principled man," he said.
He also explained why he has deliberately avoided visiting Aso Rock since Tinubu became president, stating that he does not want to be labeled as a political opportunist.
"If Nigeria were a normal place, by now, I would have gone to Aso Rock to greet him as a brother and friend. But if I do that, people will say I am looking for an appointment. They’ll say, ‘We told you hunger would drive him to Aso Rock,’" he noted.
"So, I have deliberately avoided Aso Rock to ensure my name is not added to the list of political jobbers. This decision is intentional, and I have no apologies. People are waiting for the day I will trend on social media with claims that I have finally gone there to beg," Momodu concluded.
