'That certificate is not ours' - Ghanaian chef busted for forging GWR cooking certificate

Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith has been caught making false claims about breaking the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

Known as Millennium Chef Smith, he held a press conference on Tuesday, June 2, where he presented a certificate to fans at a star-studded event at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

He claimed to have set a new record with an 820-hour 25-minute cook-a-thon, starting on February 1 and ending on March 6, 2024.

At the briefing, he said, "Today is a day I will forever remember. I am incredibly humbled and honored to stand before you as the Guinness World Record holder."

His claims were, however, debunked by Alina Polianskaya, a PR Executive from Guinness World Records in a communique to BBC Pidgin, stating, "No, this is not true at all.

“He does not hold the GWR title; that certificate is not ours."

Polianskaya further reiterated that the authentic longest-cooking marathon record holder remains Alan Fisher of Ireland, who cooked for 119 hours 57 minutes in Japan, surpassing Nigeria's Hilda Baci by 24 hours.

Shortly after announcing his false record, Smith and his manager were arrested for reportedly misusing sponsor funds, including a significant donation from the owner of Amadia Shopping Centre amounting to about 350,000 cedis, according to Sahara Reporters.

According to the reports, Chef Smith didn't stick to the agreement with his main sponsor, Amadia Shopping Centre.
