Rufai Oseni defends Peter Obi after Soyinka says he is unfit to lead Nigeria

Popular on-air personality and journalist Rufai Oseni has disagreed with a recent comment by Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, who said Peter Gregory Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), is unfit to lead the country.

Rufai Oseni, in his reaction, says he respects the role the statesman has played in Nigeria but disagrees with him on his submissions.

Speaking on The What's Trending segment of the Morning Show on Friday, May 24, he said, "... what about the people who were involved in ethnic strife? What about the people who carried out Oro in the elections in Lagos? Professor Wole Soyinka has not said anything about that. What about the people who were beaten? Professor Wole Soyinka has not said anything about that."

"What about the people in Ikota who were beaten, all of a sudden Oro came out because of the election, he's not talking about that. But this thing is always about Obi, and when we ask him to comment about the current President, he'll say I don't comment after the election. Now it's one year, he should comment, but he will not still comment."

"But we will not stop respecting him for the role he played in Nigeria. I have a lot of respect for him because when it was time to stand tall, he stood tall in this country, and we have a lot of respect for him. But there are things you will say that we will disagree with."

According to Soyinka, the inability of the former Anambra governor to control his supporters from attacking others with opposing views online was a pointer that he was unfit to lead a country like Nigeria.

The literary icon also accused Obi of encouraging ‘Obidients’ to attack him and others with opposing views online.

Speaking in an interview with Noble Nigeria, the Nobel laureate said he hoped the former governor wouldn’t contest the 2027 presidential election.

“I hope for the sake of the nation that he doesn’t express interest in the next election because for me as a leader, if there was any proof that he was unfit to lead that country, it’s in the conduct which he encouraged among his followers. I know for a fact, and I can give you an instance that proves that he was in control of those forces.
