Nigerians have expressed displeasure after telecommunication company, MTN Nigeria, increased the price of 15GB weekly data plan from N2,000 to N6,000 as seen on the company's website.
A note written on the website reads, "15GB Weekly Plan. Get 15GB for N6,000. Valid for 7 days (Pay with card or MoMo)."
However, a note written below the above price still reflects a N2,000 price for the 15GB weekly data plan.
It reads, "MTN Nigeria offers a variety of data plans tailored to meet your internet needs. One standout offer is the 15GB for 2000 MTN. This MTN digital weekly bundle is ideal for those who need a reliable, budget-friendly weekly plan."
Reacting, one X user, @0xBaldiola, said, "MTN is a joke. 6k! Not even 4k o. 3.5gb was 500 now it's 1k. But they increased the 15gb plan from 2k to 6k a x3 increase and then no increase the data. Thunder fire una. Only painful thing now na my 95gb wey go waste and I no fit to extend."
@Tunnykvng said, "Not even 4k, from 2k to 6k. MTN na big thief."
@ahdebeesaid, "MTN increasing 15gb price from 2k to 6k is the most brutal thing. why did they do that?"
@officialdey1 said, "Bro!!! MTN gonna lose customers because I don't understand how you will raise the cost of 15GB data from 2k to 6k."
It is not clear whether the increase is part of the 50% tariff increase approved for telecom operators by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
However, MyNigeria reported that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, recently said the NCC is yet to approve the implementation of the tariff increase.
This was as he revealed that an increase in tariff will optimize service delivery because telecom operators will have available funds to operate and expand.
Speaking to Channels Television in Lagos, the MTN CEO said a proposal has been sent to the regulator for the implementation of the tariff raise.
He said, "We've made our submissions to the NCC and they've been going through them in all detail to ensure that it is fair to consumers and to ensure that no one has an undue competitive advantage and it will be approved in short order
"We are being held to task by the authorities on this. With improved cash flow as a result of tariff increases, it gives us the ability to invest, first of all in a constant supply of diesel and ensuring our sites are kept up.
"Second is expanding our network in areas where we have congestion and third is putting redundancy into place as well as customer management systems.
"We are expected by the authorities will do that within a matter of months and if we don't, we'll be held to account by them."
