Maduka Okoye's availability for Nigeria's FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March remains in doubt following his recent injury.
The 25-year-old sustained a wrist injury in Udinese's Serie A clash against Genoa last week.
Udinese announced on the club's website that the Super Eagles goalkeeper will undergo surgery in the coming days and is expected to be out for close to four months.
This means Nigeria will have to replace the former Watford goalkeeper, who has been a strong backup to Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali in the Super Eagles post.
As the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues its long search for a new Super Eagles head coach, OwnGoalNigeria reports that a new goalkeeper will be recommended for the candidates who will get the nod as the next head coach of the three-time African champions.
The report indicated that Interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen is expected to return to his role as technical director of the NFF and will be responsible for making the recommendation.
Okoye last featured for the Super Eagles in their 2-1 home defeat to Rwanda in the last 2025 AFCON qualifiers in Uyo.
