Ghanaian market women have raised concerns over the increasing number of Nigerian marketers selling goods directly to consumers in Ghana at lower prices.
According to the traders, in the past, Nigerian market women supplied items to Ghanaian market women, but now they are selling directly to consumers, undercutting local prices.
One trader noted that a pail of beans, which used to sell for Gh90, is now being sold for Gh70 and Gh60, causing significant losses to their businesses.
“As marketers in Accra, we have come together to air our concerns. Nigerians have moved to Ghana and the things that we sell here, they have brought some from their country, reduced the price and are also selling them here.
They used to be wholesalers who gave the items to us, the market women but now they don’t give it to us anymore, they sell directly to the people. The beans that we sell for Gh¢ 90, they sell it for Gh¢ 70 and Gh¢60. Ghanaians no longer buy from us and it is affecting our business.
We are calling on the government and market leaders to do something about it because we don’t want to take the law into our hands.”
This video sparked a debate on social media, with many Ghanaians rebuking the local traders for complaining about high prices.
In defense of the Nigerian traders, Ghanaians are urging their traders to lower prices instead of complaining and asking for government intervention.
Below are some reactions.
@_Roofman2131gh: Lower your price to compete, most of these market women are just greedy that’s all
@XbyVibes: If you can’t beat them, join them. Inflating prices like fetching water.
@justine_martha: The Ghanaian women naa they are part. They have overpriced their products so much that you can’t even buy them. Someone comes in to sell it at a lower price, then you come out crying? They should do better.
@Junior_Jesuz: So why can’t they also sell at lower prices? If the Nigerians can sell at lower prices, then that means they can also do same
@drakedewoo1: Nigerians should keep the good work up

@PositiveAt59011: I thought those Nigerians were whites but Africans! Madams go & reduce the prices & find somewhere & seat
