Political activist and presidential candidate Owoyele Sowore has announced a scheduled nationwide protest following the arrest and remand of Human Rights activist Dele Farotimi.
Sowore, in a post on X, disclosed the protest "Nationwide/Global Protest Against the Nigerian Judiciary" is scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
The post included possible convergent points for the protesters.
"NATIONWIDE/GLOBAL PROTEST AGAINST THE NIGERIAN JUDICIARY #FreeDeleFarotimi #PressFreedom #RepealCyberCrimeAct. Nigerians refuse to be SILENCED. DATE- 10th, December, 2024. Locations: Lagos- Afe Babalola Chambers, Abuja- Federal Ministry of Justice, Ekiti- Police Headquarters, Ado-Ekiti, London- Kings’ College Campus, Let's make it happen. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” he wrote on X.
This latest move came after the arrest of Farotimi over alleged defamation of Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
Sowore had earlier criticized Farotimi's arrest, describing it as "an abuse of Police powers" and stressing that a civil case should not have warranted police intervention.
Recall that the Ekiti State Police command invaded Farotimi’s office in Lekki, Lagos, on Tuesday to arrest him and take him to Ado Ekiti following Mr. Babalola’s petition.
Babalola alleged in his petition that Farotimi defamed him in his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’. The book, according to the prosecution, alleged that Mr. Babalola corrupted the Supreme Court to procure a fraudulent judgment in the service of his clients.
