The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has shared his thoughts on the Super Eagles' harrowing experience in Libya for the AFCON qualifiers.
The Super Eagles team boycotted their match against Libya after being left stranded at the airport for over 16 hours after their arrival on Sunday night.
The team's Valuejet flight, initially scheduled to land in Benghazi, was diverted to the eastern Libyan city of Bayda, where the team spent several hours at the airport without any food, drink, or internet.
The team later returned home to Nigeria after the Libyan Federation failed to send any delegation or arrange for a shuttle to transport them to their hotel.
The development has attracted widespread condemnation from around the world, and the former governor of Anambra State is the latest to add his voice.
In an eight-paragraph statement on X, Peter Obi sympathized with the team for the ordeal while urging them not to let the experience weigh them down.
"Like every other patriotic Nigerian, I sincerely sympathize with our dear Super Eagles over their ordeal in Libya on their way to play the Morocco 2025 AFCON Qualifier return leg match, which was later delisted by CAF following the players' decision not to play the match.
"While we await the outcome of an investigation ordered by CAF, I wish to use this opportunity to commend the players for their patriotism, patience, and forbearance in the face of the unfair treatment by our Libyan brothers. I appeal to them not to allow this sad experience to dampen their zeal or break their spirit."
