Popular on-air personality Rufai Oseni stated in a tweet that a bag of rice now costs almost half a million naira, sparking mixed reactions.

The increase in the prices of essential food commodities has been mainly attributed to insecurity, high transportation costs, climate change, and the instability of the naira exchange rate, according to experts.

In a recent post, Oseni said: "340k bag of beans" as the high cost of food items has led to protests nationwide.

Food inflation has become a common concern among households, particularly during negotiations for a new minimum wage by organized labor, who highlighted the challenges faced by Nigerian workers due to rising food prices.

The current hard time which is keeping prospective buyers away from the market is also taking a toll on traders who now complain of poor sales in recent times.

In June 2024, some residents of Lagos raised concern over the cost of beans which is their major source of protein.

According to them, the consistent rise at the time was unbearable as they urged governments to intervene.

NAN reports that a 40kg bag of beans, which sold for N26,000 in January, now sells for N115,000, while a 100kg bag which sold for N55,000 at the beginning of the year, now sells for N230,000.

A housewife and mother of four in Santos Estate, Akowonjo, Mrs Uloma Chigozirim, expressed worry that children might be malnourished following the high increase in the price of beans.

“Beans used to be the cheapest food; now, we do not even understand what is going on. Every other week, the price keeps going up; even traders cannot tell us the reason for the hike.
