Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, born on August 4, 1961, in Lagos State, Nigeria, is a prominent economist, banker, and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He served as the CBN Governor from June 4, 2014, until his suspension on June 9, 2023.
Emefiele has a strong academic background, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Banking and Finance and a Master’s degree in Finance from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He also completed executive education programs at Stanford University, Harvard University, and the Wharton School of Business.
Before his tenure at the CBN, Emefiele had an extensive career in the banking sector, notably serving as the Chief Executive Officer and Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc.
During his time at the CBN, he implemented several key policies, including an interventionist currency policy and a multiple exchange rate regime to stabilize the Nigerian Naira1. His tenure was marked by significant economic challenges, including two recessions and high inflation rates.
