Educated in law at the University of London, he became a respected figure in Nigeria's legal and corporate sectors. Co-founding the law firm Aluko & Oyebode, Shonekan played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria's commercial legal landscape, earning renown for his expertise in corporate law and business management.

In August 1993, during a period of political transition in Nigeria, Shonekan was appointed Interim President by then-Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida. As a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), his brief tenure aimed to lead the nation toward civilian rule amidst economic challenges and social unrest. However, his administration faced significant hurdles, and after just three months, Shonekan resigned from office in November 1993.

Shonekan's personal life included his marriage and family, although details remain relatively private. Tragically, Ernest Shonekan passed away on January 11, 2022.
