The Lagos State government has announced plans to ban sachet water, popularly known as pure water, beginning in January 2025.
Authorities also mentioned the intention to ban the circulation of single-use plastics such as PET bottles.
This information was shared by the Environment and Water Resources Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, at a stakeholder workshop organized by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) in Lagos on Thursday, October 3, 2024.
Due to the increasing environmental threats posed by plastic waste in the state, the government had previously prohibited the use of Styrofoam.
The commissioner emphasised that the ban was necessary to promote a healthy environment, prevent drainage blockages, and ensure sustainable plastic waste management.
According to Wahab, Lagos currently generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste monthly, with 60 percent being plastic.
During the workshop, some stakeholders requested the government to implement the ban in several phases.
