The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has announced a zero tolerance policy for the promotion of LGBTQ+ activities in the state.
Governor Yusuf has ordered the arrest of individuals and groups advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights.
This decision comes in response to escalating tensions over groups allegedly promoting same-sex marriage in Kano.
The state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Baba Dantiye, addressed concerns about an alleged agreement related to LGBTQ+ rights by the Federal Government in a statement to the press on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
According to Dantiye, the state government rejects any agreement that promotes the activities of gays and lesbians, as it contradicts the norms and values of the people of Kano and violates the state’s moral standards.
The commissioner confirmed that the governor has authorized the Hisbah Board to crack down on groups promoting LGBT rights in the state.
“I spoke with the governor, and he expressed his disapproval of the said agreement, even though it has not yet been confirmed. He assured me that there is no room for LGBT activities in Kano,” Dantiye said.
“As you know, 98% of Kano’s population are Muslims by faith, and our religion is against this immorality, so we can’t accept it.”
“We also discussed this with the governor, and he directed Hisbah to investigate and crack down on them. We will take legal action as appropriate,” he added.
