The Senior Special Adviser to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Adewoye Adeyemi, has urged regions in Nigeria clamouring for sea port to task their governors and billionaires to invest in achieving such.

Adeyemi said this amid agitation from the Southeast region of Nigeria to have a sea port.

According to a post he shared on X, the law allows private investors to construct deep sea port in Nigeria.

He continued, "FG from 90s began the removal of exclusive control of ports or deep sea ports in our laws.

"Section 8 (L) of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Acts stipulates that the NPA can “enter agreement with any person for the operation or provision of any port facilities which many be operated or provided by the Authority”.

"The duty to grant an area as a port is Provided for in Section 30 (1) of the Nigerian Ports Act."

He said with the above law, any investor can apply to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for permit to construct jetty, ports, deep sea ports etc.

"NPA will forward your application to the Honorable Minister of Marine & Blue Economy (before Transportation Minister) for approval. He will seek FEC’s approval based on the recommendation of Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission after approving OBC Compliance Certificate.

"Same Process Lekki Deep Sea Port followed. They applied in 2013. In 2018, past FG not Buhari flagged off the project.

"We have several deep sea ports pending. They are: Olokola Deep Sea port (Ogun state); Bakassi Deep Sea Port (Cross River) Ibom Deep Sea Port (Akwa Ibom); Escravos $27bn Seaport (Delta); Ondo Multi-purpose Deep Sea port at Ilaje LGA (Ondo State); Agge deep sea port (Bayelsa)," he said.

He wondered why those behind such agitations are not applying to NPA to construct their own deep sea port

"Deep sea port can be viewed like Dangote and NNPC refineries. Govt will approve your application. Encourage Owambes billionaires to invest in deep sea ports construction. Encourage your Gov to woo investors to construct deep sea. It is a LIE that only Govt can construct a deep sea port. The law allows full private sector control," he concluded.
