The police command in Delta State has identified the woman who dumped her one-and-half-year-old baby inside a well.

Commissioner, Abaniwonda Olufemi said the woman identified as Sofia Nkwor has been arrested for infanticide.

He noted the case was reported at Oleh Police Division, Isoko South LGA and indicated that she is currently in police custody.

Nkwor, a native of Nsien, Ndokwa East LGA committed the crime on April 28, 2024, along the road in Araya community, Isoko South Local Government Area of the state.

She admitted dumping the baby in the well after the father of the child and her grandmother abandoned her with the child.

“The father abandoned me after denying the baby and my grandma, whom I am staying with, equally abandoned me.

“As a farmer, the baby was distracting me from my farming job. I was actually in a bad mood when I did it. I loved the baby but was helpless then. No helper. I was alone taking care of her. It was after the vigilante arrested me and handed me over to the police that l realized what l did,” Sofia stated.

The child was discovered by children playing around the well.
