The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, says the party is pleased with the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking at the inauguration of unit, ward, and local government canvassers under the Alubarika Movement of the APC in Osun State on Sunday, February 2, Basiru attributed the PDP's internal turmoil to the personal ambitions of some party stalwarts.
His comments come in response to allegations by Atiku Abubakar, a former PDP presidential candidate, who claimed that the APC bribed PDP leaders with ₦50 million each to destabilize the opposition.
Basiru, however, dismissed Atiku’s claims, stating that the APC is not afraid of the PDP or any other opposition party.
"The ambitions of a few individuals are responsible for the rift within the opposition party. As the ruling party, we are happy if they fail to put their house in order. It is not our job to help them resolve their internal crisis," he said.
The PDP's internal conflict began shortly after Atiku Abubakar won the party's presidential primaries. Nyesom Wike, who had also aspired to the presidency, was aggrieved because he believed the party’s ticket should have been zoned to the South.
The crisis escalated last week when two party chieftains clashed over the position of National Secretary.
Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye caused a major stir during the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.
The confrontation turned physical as confusion arose over who should assume the role of substantive National Secretary.
Earlier, the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu had declared Ude-Okoye as the rightful National Secretary following the vacancy left by Anyanwu, who had stepped aside to run for the Imo State governorship election.
However, Anyanwu insisted that Ude-Okoye had no authority to assume the position despite the court ruling.
Citing his appeal of the decision at the Supreme Court, Anyanwu argued that the status quo should be maintained until a final judgment is delivered.
