There have been several reactions to Peter Gregory Obi's comment that he is open to a possible merger with the largest opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party.
Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential elections, made this known in an interview on Noire TV-Global Black TV over the weekend.
A likely merger would see him return to the party he left in the lead-up to the 2023 elections, potentially setting up a political face-off with Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the PDP in the same elections.
Obi expressed his appreciation for the gesture by the former Vice President, who stated that he would support a Southeast candidate in the 2027 presidential election if the ticket is zoned to the region.
"I commend him and I'm grateful for his statements, especially where he said he will support me if the presidential ticket goes to the South East," Obi said.
The Labour Party candidate emphasized that his primary concern is not personal ambition or political maneuvering, but rather the well-being of Nigeria and its people.
"I'm not desperate to be president; I'm desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people because we have a lot of potential," he said.
Regarding the potential merger between the PDP and LP, Obi stated that he is open to the idea, provided that the goal is to govern Nigeria better and unlock its vast potential.
"If the merger is aimed at properly governing Nigeria and unlocking all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I'm for it," he said.
Obi also made it clear that he has no interest in mergers or alliances solely to secure power or win elections.
"If it's just a merger for election or state capture, I'm not for it or part of it. I don't want to be part of anything like that," he said.
