A bill to provide for the establishment of the Nigeria National Commission against the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and for related matters has passed second reading.
This was revealed in a tweet by the official Twitter handle of the Nigerian Senate, @NGRSenate.
The bill was sponsored by Senator Smart Adeyemi. Supporting the bill were two senators who aired their opinions regarding the bill.
Senator Basiru Ajibola said, "I will say that this Bill speaks to the concern of all of us. The prohibition of small arms has become a special issue that needs a special solution
“If this commission is put in place it will go a long way in restructuring the security architecture of the country.”

Senator Adamu Aliero lauded the bill, saying it will help fight the security situation being experienced in Nigeria.
“The Bill is apt and timely considering the security situation we are facing in Nigeria today. It is right in time to set up a commission to be in charge of the proliferation of arms in Nigeria.”- Adamu stated.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan referred the Bill to the Committee on National Security and Intelligence to report in four weeks.
