The Independent National Electoral Commission has explained why they deregistered 74 political parties
The electoral body made this explanation via its twitter handle, @inecnigeria.
It said the 75 political parties did not satisfy the requirements of the Fourth Alteration to the Constitution.
Making recourse to Section 225 A of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, it gave three reasons why a political party can be deregistered.
According to the Constitution:
"A political party can be deregistered if there is a breach of any of the requirements for registration
"A political party can also be deregistered on failure to win at least 25% of votes cast in one State of the Federation in a Presidential election or one local Government of a state in a Governorship election
A political party can be deregistered if it fails to win at least one ward in the Chairmanship Election; one seat in the national or state House of Assembly election; or one seat in a Councillorship election."
