We are proud of him too – Sadiq Abacha garners support as he defends late father's legacy

Gen Sani Abacha Gen Sani Abacha

Sadiq Abacha, son of Nigeria’s former military ruler, General Sani Abacha has defended his criticism against his father describing him as a victim of envy and betrayal.

He made this known in a post on his Facebook page expressing confidence that history would judge Abacha fairly despite ongoing criticism.

“The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit. History shall remember you for being a better leader, no matter how much they try to put you down. As a son, I am most proud of you today. You indeed are the man they wish they were half of,” he wrote.

He concluded his message with a Hausa proverb: “Duk wanda yayi jifa a kasuwa,” which translates to “whoever throws a stone in the market…”—a phrase commonly interpreted as a reminder that actions have consequences.

His comment comes following the launch of former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir which has reignited discussions about the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election

Babangida admitted at the event in Abuja that the election, won by MKO Abiola, was annulled due to internal pressures within his government, allegedly led by Abacha.

While Babangida has expressed regret over the decision, Sadiq’s statement offers a contrasting perspective on his father’s legacy.

General Abacha ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998. His tenure was defined by economic reforms and security policies, but also marred by allegations of human rights abuses and corruption.

His post generated varied reactions on social media

Zaku Nagyi commented: "He was one of the best things that has happened to Nigeria. His track records are evidently seen, we miss him but God knows best. Allah jikan sa."

Tijjani Abdullahi Dankumbo wrote: "I’m deeply grateful for your words and support of your father. It is an honor to stand in defense of his legacy, even in his absence. History will always reveal the truth, no matter how much they try to distort it. We will always carry the pride of being his well-wishers. May we continue to stand for what we believe in, and may General Sani Abacha, continue to rest in peace. Ameen."

Hijr Miskeenah Rauda commented: "We are proud of him too, may his soul continue to rest in jannah amin"

Amina Wali wrote: "IBB - The hero we once thought he was and the coward we never imagined he would be.. May Allah have mercy on the soul of Gen Sani Abacha ya masa rahama"
