INEC receives missing details in petition to recall Senator Natasha

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed receipt of the contact addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of representatives who submitted a petition to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central.

The disclosure was made on Wednesday, March 26, by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun. He stated that the missing details had been provided in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Commission, dated March 26, 2025.

On Tuesday, March 25, the electoral body acknowledged receiving the petition to recall the embattled senator. However, it noted that the petition initially failed to meet the “requirements” for such an action. INEC explained that the representatives of the petitioners had omitted their contact addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses in the covering letter accompanying the petition, as stipulated in Clause 1(f) of its Regulations and Guidelines.

Providing an update, INEC stated: “As provided in Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024, a letter has been written to notify the Senator sought to be recalled about the receipt of the petition and delivered to her official address. The same letter has been copied to the presiding officer of the Senate and published on the Commission’s website.”

The Commission added that the next step involves scrutinizing the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners to verify that the petition is signed by more than half (over 50%) of the registered voters in the constituency.

Olumekun noted that this verification process would be conducted in the coming days, with the outcome made public to determine the Commission’s next steps.

INEC reassured Nigerians that the recall process would remain open and transparent.
