Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has dismissed widespread reports suggesting that he is considering joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the country’s largest opposition party.
He made this known during an exclusive interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Monday evening while addressing speculation surrounding his recent meetings with opposition figures.
While he expressed openness to joining another political party that aligns with his progressive ideals, he ruled out the possibility of joining the PDP, stating that the opposition party is in an even worse state.
El-Rufai also addressed rumors about his potential presidential ambition, asserting that while he is qualified to run for the presidency, he has never discussed such plans with anyone.
According to him:
"Anyone from the age of 35 with a secondary school certificate is qualified to run for president, so in that sense, I am qualified.
"But have I started talking to anybody about running for any office? No. I have never discussed that with anybody.
"PDP is not a party I would consider joining. I thought about it long ago and made my decision. Nothing has changed.”
Recall that El-Rufai recently met with some PDP members in Kaduna State. He also held meetings with former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and representatives of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
