How I'll end sit-at-home - Anambra gov aspirant

An All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant in the coming 2025 Anambra State governorship race, Onyeka Nwafor, has revealed how he intends to put an end to the sit-at-home observed in the South-East every Monday.

The sit-at-home is enforced to demand the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who is trying to re-establish the defunct Biafra Republic.

Kanu is being held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) as he faces charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony.

Since the commencement of the sit-at-home, as ordered by IPOB, the economy of the South-East has been experiencing a decline due to the close of businesses activities on Mondays.

Even though IPOB has openly dissociated itself from the further enforcement, the order still gets obeyed to a large extent, with residents flogged and killed by unknown gunmen for disobeying.

However, Nwafor believes that if the IPOB leader is released, progress towards a total end to the sit-at-home and the associated violence could be achieved.

"If the release of Nnamdi Kanu is part of the things that will bring peace, I will support it. Because businesses are going down.

"My government is going to talk to the people enforcing this sit-at-home; they are not spirits but Igbo people," he said.

When asked how the dialogue would take place when the actual enforcers are unknown, Nwafor said, "We will ask questions and arrests will be made."

Buttressing on his call for dialogue, the governorship aspirant said force alone cannot achieve the desired result.
