Olayemi Michael “Yemi” Cardoso, born on July 10, 1957, in Lagos, Nigeria, is a distinguished banker and the current Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), having assumed office on September 15, 2023.
He has a solid educational background, having attended Corona School Ikoyi and St. Gregory’s College in Lagos, followed by a Bachelor’s degree in Managerial and Administrative Studies from Aston University, UK, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Cardoso’s career spans both public and private sectors, where he has held significant roles such as Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State, Chairman of Citibank Nigeria, and board member of several organizations including MRS Oil and the Lagos Business School. His contributions in these roles have been pivotal in driving economic reforms and development in Nigeria.
As the CBN Governor, Cardoso has been actively involved in major policy decisions aimed at stabilizing the Nigerian economy. Notably, he has implemented the floating of the Naira to restore market trust and combat speculation and has addressed inflation concerns by raising Nigeria’s interest rate to 27.25%. His leadership continues to shape the financial landscape of Nigeria.
