Ifeanyichukwu Arthur Okowa (born July 8, 1959) is a Nigerian doctor and politician who served as the Governor of Delta State from May 2015 to May 2023. Born in Owa-Alero, Delta State, Okowa pursued his education at Edo College in Benin City and later studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ibadan, earning an MBBS degree in 1981. After completing his National Youth Service Corps, he worked as a Medical Officer with the Bendel State Hospitals Management Board.
Okowa's political career began at the local level, where he served as Secretary to the Ika Local Government and later as Chairman of the Ika North-East Local Government Council. Joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1998, he played a significant role in Governor James Ibori's campaign and held various positions in the Delta State government, including Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Water Resources Development, and Health. Although he ran for the Delta State PDP governorship primaries in 2007 without success, he was elected Senator for Delta North in 2011 and served for four years.
In 2015, Okowa was elected Governor of Delta State, becoming the first ethnic Ika (Igbo-speaking) person from the state's north to hold this position. He was re-elected in 2019, focusing on development and prosperity for Delta State. In the 2023 presidential election, Okowa was the vice-presidential candidate of the PDP, running alongside Atiku Abubakar, highlighting his rise from local politics to national prominence and his dedication to public service.
