As the threat of Coronavirus is made imminent day by day, Twitter users are actually wondering if any hope of research can emanate from the Academic Staff Union of Universities in Nigeria.
The essence of university education is to conduct research and in cases of epidemics of this nature, ASUU should rise up to the occasion.
However, none of them have given Professor Iwu, a Nigerian Professor of Pharmacognosy a chance to discuss his newfound discovery of a cure for the virus.
Twitter users have taken opposite sides against one another, in an urge to ascertain how well prepared Nigeria is for the spread.
Chief among this is @Mazigburugburu1's frontal assault on the institution in his quoted tweet.
See why nobody takes ASUU seriously?Academic institutions worldwide are tasking their health arms to work with their govts to find quick thereupetic & vaccine solutions for the coronavirus epidemic,ASUU is quiet while one VC was showcasing bread & palm oil produced in his school.

Pete will actually go on to counter him with this
You’ve never fought for improved funding for universities, constantly berate ASUU when they strike for better welfare and turn a blind eye to infrastructure delay, yet you’re expecting Lecturers to work on a coronavirus cure?

@jolaoluwa04 still lacks faith in the cause
The same ASUU that frustrates and sexually harrass Nigerian students while their own kids school in private universities and abroad?? Which ASUU?? Mtchewww https://t.co/qEtkHFIBdd

Another reasonable angle
@Mazigburugburu1 I am surprised you are blaming ASUU for this. How are they supposed to handle viral epidemic with no functional labs? If government funds the universities, then hold ASUU responsible?

Prof. Iwu claimed to have a cure, has FGN taken him seriously?
so sophisticated for us here.
— CHUKWUDOZIE (@dumakadozie) March 3, 2020
Who would fund such when the simpler things are underfunded?
In this ASUU is completely blameless, let @NCDCgov handle the few researches till we are serious about funding education in this country
So far, statistics from @subgap, a daily coronavirus update account says more than 3,000 people have died from the virus. Nonetheless, many still think it's a hoax as no one actually recovers from the virus- some people say.
