Veteran Nigerian comedian Atunyota Akpobome, popularly known as Alibaba, has disclosed that he would have been fired if he had ever been appointed to a government position.
Alibaba made this revelation during an interview on the Outside the Box Podcast, aired on YouTube on Saturday, April 5. While explaining why he chose not to venture into politics despite having the opportunity, he stated that his appointors would likely sack him if he were ever appointed.
He further revealed that he was once offered the role of Minister of State under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Reflecting on the offer, he said, “I was offered Minister of State during Obasanjo's time, and I was supposed to make the rounds so that by the time I got to the assembly…”
Alibaba explained his reservations about holding public office, saying, “I know that if I get public office, they will sack me. I got one particular appointment after that offer didn’t work out. I was made the chairman of the COVID Creative Industry. As soon as I was named, there was harassment—‘Who is he? From where? The creative industry has broadcasters, seasoned professionals, and this and that. What is he?’”
He added that despite the criticism, former Minister of Information Lai Mohammed defended his appointment, saying, “This same guy you’re talking about has created content for TV stations and radio stations. He has worked in advertising, presented radio and TV programs, owns a broadcast house, and has been in entertainment for nearly 40 years.”
Alibaba’s comments shed light on the challenges faced by individuals transitioning from creative industries to public office, highlighting the scrutiny and skepticism that often accompany such appointments.
