The N30 million GoFundMe campaign set up for TikToker Jarvis, who is battling a mouth tumor requiring immediate medical attention, has sparked criticism from a Nigerian dentist.
The dentist, known as @Dentalgiorgio on X, argued that the N30 million needed for surgery was excessive shortly after Jarvis and her colleague and boyfriend, Peller, shared the GoFundMe and requested contributions from followers.
@Dentalgiorgio stated that the surgery, diagnostics, biopsy, admission fees, and food would cost less than 1% of the amount requested by the TikTokers at his facility, approximately N200,000, with a total cost of just over N500,000.
The dentist referred to the fundraising effort as "Detty December," insinuating that the funds would be used for personal enjoyment.
Considering that surgery at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) was priced at around N405,000 the previous year, it seems that the campaign's financial target was exaggerated.
This incident has sparked a broader social media discussion about the ethics and transparency of crowdfunding for medical treatments.
MyNigeria previously reported that following the launch of GoFundMe by Peller, many social media users accused the TikTokers of attempting to scam Nigerians.
