The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) is calling on Nigerians to be cautious during Valentines Day.
The agency recommends that the public approach this year’s Valentine’s Day with a focus on safety and responsibility, stating that love and intimacy should always be accompanied by protection.
In a statement issued by Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director General of NACA, it is suggested that Valentine’s Day be celebrated with informed decisions. Dr Ilori adds that individuals should take measures to protect themselves and their partners from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Dr. Ilori noted that HIV remains a health concern, but it is preventable. She warns that risky behaviors such as unprotected sex, having multiple partners, or substance abuse can increase the risk of HIV transmission.
She said, “We want everyone to enjoy Valentine’s Day while making choices that safeguard their health. HIV is preventable, and we have the means to halt its spread. Love responsibly, get tested, and make informed decisions”.
Dr Ilori urges Nigerians to know their HIV status and protect themselves and others. She encourages regular HIV testing, highlighting that free testing is available at all government hospitals.
