Seun Kuti reveals Fela had more than 100 concubines beyond his 27 wives

Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti has revealed that his father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the legendary pioneer of the Afrobeat genre, had more than 100 concubines in addition to his 27 wives.

While many are familiar with Fela's polygamous marriage to 27 women, few are aware of the extensive number of concubines who also resided in his household.

This insight was shared by Seun during the latest episode of the 'Bahd & Boujee' Podcast, which is co-hosted by reality TV star Tolanibaj and actress Moet Abebe.

“People only know of Fela’s 27 wives, they don’t know of his over 100 girlfriends that lived with us in the house,” Seun disclosed.

He also commented on the reason behind his father's mass wedding in 1978, where Fela married 27 women in a single ceremony.

This move, according to Seun, was to protect the women's honor and dignity against media claims that labeled his female dancers and band members as prostitutes.

The mass wedding of Fela to 27 women was a bold and unconventional act that remains a notable event in his storied life.
