Veteran Nigerian actor, Pete Edochie passionately recounted the true origin of highlife music in a recently discovered video, crediting Ghana with the genre's creation.
By taking the time to acknowledge key Ghanaian musicians who played a pivotal role in the development of highlife music, Pete Edochie's revelation contradicts claims that highlife originated in Nigeria.
He put to rest any doubts about the authenticity of the highlife genre by stating, "All this music originated from Ghana. Why? In Nigeria, the predominant genre of music was highlife. Where did highlife come from? Ghana! That's where it all began!"
He proceeded to highlight a lineage of iconic Ghanaian highlife musicians, starting with the renowned E.T. Mensah, known as the "King of Highlife" for his music that resonated with audiences across West Africa. Pete Edochie also gave credit to the Black Beats Band of Ghana, led by King Bruce, whose rhythms paved the way for future generations of highlife artists.
Additionally, he acknowledged the contributions of Jerry Hansen and the Ramblers Dance Band, as well as Joss Aikins and his Broadway Dance Band, in popularizing highlife music on a global scale.
In addition to music, Ghana also made an impact in the world of sports. Pete Edochie recounted the story of Ghana producing the first African boxer to achieve global recognition.
He shared an amusing tale about Nigeria and Ghana seemingly competing to produce the best boxers.
In his words, "When it comes to sports, the first Ghanaian boxer to become a British Empire featherweight champion was Roy Ankrah. However, we (Nigerians) had world champions before you (Ghanaians). Then you started producing them. We had the first world featherweight boxing champion, Nigeria. The first world midweight boxing champion, Dean Tiger from Nigeria. Then we paused, and you took over with Ike Klottey and Azuma Nelson."
Pete Edochie also reminisced about the 1957 Jalco Cup match between the Red Devils of Nigeria and the Black Stars of Ghana. He recalled the game not with nostalgia but with a sense of melancholy as Ghana defeated Nigeria 7-0. He mentioned Edward Aggrey-Fynn and Wilberforce Mfum as key figures in Ghana's victory.
In Pete Edochie's words, "It would be difficult for you to see any country on the continent of Africa that has impressed the world like Ghana."
