Lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency, Desmond Eliot, was left emotional after Speaker Mojisola Meranda announced her decision to resign from the position of Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

On Monday, March 3, 2025, Meranda declared her intention to vacate the seat of Speaker of the Assembly in the interest of maintaining peace and unity.

This comes amid the ongoing scuffle between the lawmakers and the embattled Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached in January due to his gross behaviour towards President Bola Tinubu and the Assembly.

Following Obasa’s impeachment while he was away in the United States of America, Meranda was sworn in as Speaker, making her the first female Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly.

Displeased by the “illegal” impeachment, Obasa went to court. While the court case was still ongoing, Meranda submitted her resignation.

The house was filled with emotions as actor turned politician Desmond Elliot rose to bid her goodbye despite her short stay but was engulfed with tears.

His actions attracted various reactions from Nigerians, with some claiming he was acting.
