Meghan Markle honors Princess Diana with heirloom necklace during Nigerian visit

During her recent trip to Nigeria, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, was seen wearing a cherished necklace that once belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. This marked the first occasion Meghan publicly donned the piece.

The necklace, a poignant gift from her husband, Prince Harry, features a diamond cross pendant on a gold chain. Meghan showcased the heirloom at a reception for military families in Abuja on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

The royal couple's three-day Nigerian tour aimed to support the Invictus Games for Nigerian veterans. Their visit included a variety of engagements, such as school visits and a volleyball match with Nigerian soldiers.

For the event, the Duchess paired the cross necklace with a St. Agni white strapless column linen dress, complemented by a ponytail that elegantly displayed the necklace.

Previously on her podcast 'Archetypes,' Meghan revealed her 43% Nigerian ancestry, as determined by a genealogy test.

At a reception hosted at the Defense Headquarters Officers Mess, NiDCOM Chairperson Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa affectionately proclaimed, "Princess Meghan is a Nigerian!"

Dabiri-Erewa addressed Prince Harry, saying, "You married the best, our daughter, our friend, Princess Meghan. We hope to see you return many times."

In response, Meghan expressed her gratitude and admiration: "I am flattered, honored, and inspired. The warm welcome my husband and I have received has been overwhelming. I've taken note of the vibrant local fashion and will embrace more color in the future."

She continued, "Thank you all for your gracious hospitality in welcoming us to this country," and with a heartfelt pause, she added amid applause, "my country."
