Former military leader, General Ibrahim Babangida, commonly referred to as IBB, recently released his autobiography ‘A Journey In Service’ where he shared details about his past regime.
He explained his reasons behind his decision to overthrow Buhari’s military regime, as he was dissatisfied with the former military ruler’s policies and leadership styles.
IBB, who was Buhari’s Chief of Staff when the latter overthrew former civilian president Shehu Shagari in the December 31, 1983 coup.
On August 27, 1985, Buhari’s regime was overthrown by Babangida in a coup d’etat.
The book was launched in Abuja on Thursday, February 20, 2025. IBB explained that Buhari’s policies at the time “were detrimental to the nation’s progress” and his dissatisfaction “eventually led to its ouster in 1985.”
He wrote: “After the military coup that replaced the civilian government of Shehu Shagari with a military regime led by Major General Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida assumed the role of Chief of Army Staff.
“However, he became increasingly dissatisfied with the Buhari government’s policies and leadership style, which he believed were detrimental to the nation’s progress.
“This dissatisfaction eventually led to its ouster in 1985, and he took office as the military President.”
IBB also revealed that MKO Abiola won the June 12 election which he nullified, sparking numerous reactions by Nigerians.
The former military leader received praise following his revelation, with many expressing their joy and appreciation to him.
The book, which was sold at N40,000, received billions of naira from billionaire businessmen, including Aliko Dangote and Arthur Eze.
Reacting to the revelation, activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, believes that IBB should have been arrested following his revelations.
However, he has received praise and commendation after inflicting pain on many citizens due to his actions during his regime.
He said, “Nigerians are supposed to be calling for the arrest of IBB following the evil and the demonic things he did during the time that he was in power. He is supposed to spend the rest of his life in prison. He should face severe consequences for those evil things he did. So, you’re coming out now, after how many years to tell Nigerians that you annulled the June 12 election, where our fathers and mothers stood in a queue and voted for the leader that they selected and believed would make Nigeria better. But because of your own selfish interest and because you had more power, you manipulated the law, the people. You used your power to scatter everything to your own advantage. To a point, they locked MKO Abiola in prison, which led to his death. And some people were busy clapping. Well, this is Nigeria, where everything goes."
