Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has raised concerns about the sources of wealth of his fellow musicians in the industry.

Kuti, speaking during an Instagram Live session, expressed skepticism about the possibility of some artistes’ wealth in Nigeria being solely from music earnings.

He mentioned that despite being in the music industry for over 20 years, he is only now building his first house, while some musicians with only a couple of hit songs seem to be wealthier than him.

“I have been touring for over 20 years, and I’m only just building my first house. Where is the music money coming from? Musician never get two songs, he don buy Lamborghini and G-Wagon. Where’s this music money coming from?” he asks.

In Nigeria, there have been artistes who flaunt their material wealth from the music industry on social media.

During an interview, rapper Shallipopi claimed that there is a lot of money in the music industry and that his financial success came after releasing a few hits.

Habeeb Okikikola, popularly known as Portable, also stated that there is more money in the music industry than in rituals, fraud, or football.

However, Seun Kuti seems to disagree with their perspectives. His comment comes following the bribery scandal involving crossdresser Bobrisky and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, activist Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan released a voice recording where Bobrisky claimed he paid the EFCC N15 million to drop the money laundering charges.

He also claimed to have not spent a day in prison as he stayed in a lodge, courtesy of his godfather.

These allegations sparked massive reactions from Nigerians. The EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede called for an investigation into the allegations.
